I found this book to be very enjoyable. I enjoy hearing Vivian's experiences as a teacher. It made me think about what will I experience as a teacher? She had many moments in her classroom where she wasn't sure what she should do which put me more at ease. One of my biggest fears when I become a teacher is what if something happens that I am unsure how to handle it? She showed me you learn as you go. Her first experience at a local Jewish school was one she could never forget. It was one that made her think about quitting. Even though she had a hard time she got through it! This shows me as a future teacher that I will have difficult times but things will get better and easier. I also liked how she tried many methods for handling things. If one way didn't work she would try another way. As a teacher it is important to realize every child learns differently so different menthods work with different kids.
Chapters 9-13
This book continues each chapter containing an another experience. It continues to have problems with race. I feel as though Mrs. Paley has conflict inside herself. She feels as though she must say something because it is upsetting her even though it doesn't really upset the children. In Chapter 9 Mrs. Paley has a student teacher; I feel as though Mrs. Paley learns more from her student teacher than her student teacher learns from her. I feel this shows that even if you are educated longer you can still learn from those who aren't.
Chapter 14-20
I feel as though this book is starting to get old. I feel like some experiences she is sharing are very similar to those in the previous chapters. She still is having this conflict inside herself. I wonder if she will ever become comfortable. Through out these chapters she explains how important play is to children. I total agree. I feel as though it shows if a child understand the roles of society and their creativity. It also helps them develop social skills and group work.
